1. Wat Tham Khao Noi & Wat Tham Sua
Begin your Kanchanaburi adventure with two spectacular temples located beside each other on a hill overlooking the surrounding countryside.
Wat Tham Khao Noi is particularly notable for its distinctive Chinese-style architecture, while neighbouring Wat Tham Sua (Tiger Cave Temple) is famous for its enormous seated Buddha and panoramic views.
There are steps to the temples, but a cable car may be available for an easier ascent to Wat Tham Sua.
The temples provide a wonderful contrast to the historical sites later in the tour, with panoramic views across the surrounding countryside.
2. The Bridge on the River Kwai.
Continue to one of Thailand’s best-known historical landmarks – the Bridge on the River Kwai.
Walk across the bridge, see the railway that remains in use today and learn about its connection with the Death Railway during the Second World War.
I will explain the history behind the bridge and the surrounding area, while allowing plenty of time for photographs and to take in the scenery.

3. JEATH War Museum
Continue your journey through Kanchanaburi’s wartime history at the JEATH War Museum.
The museum documents the experiences of prisoners of war and the construction of the Thai–Burma Railway during the Second World War.
This is a sombre part of the day, but an important one for visitors who want to understand the history behind the places they are seeing.
4. Kanchanaburi War Cemetery
A short distance away is the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, also known as Don Rak War Cemetery. Take a moment to walk through the beautifully maintained grounds and pay your respects to the Allied prisoners of war who died during the construction of the Death Railway. The cemetery provides a quiet and moving contrast to the busy tourist attractions around the bridge.
